What I do each morning, my routine, is constantly changing, based on the kids' needs and capabilities.
But this schedule-of-sorts has been making my mornings easier for a month--at least. I'm really liking this routine. :)
So what do I do?
I wake up between 4:50 and 5 AM, and I never go back to sleep after that (I used to, when Rachel was a newborn). Those days of "sleeping in" are long gone. There's too much to do! :)
I make breakfast, pack Matt food for his day at school/work, and then I typically get on the computer for a while. Other than when the kids are taking their afternoon naps, this morning time is typically the time that I check email, facebook, Pinterest, my favorite blogs, etc. If I'm going to be writing a blog post, I normally write it in the morning--while the house is quiet and dark. :)
Then I go upstairs and shower, dress, put on make-up, and then... I start preparing for the kiddos waking up. I've been setting out their breakfasts, so that--when they walk into the kitchen--all they have to do is climb into their chairs, and breakfast is ready. I also try to eat breakfast myself before the kids wake up so that I can feed Matthias (at the table) while the girls are eating.
After breakfast, I've been putting Matthias back into his crib with a few toys, and setting the timer for 20-30 minutes. The girls are allowed to play with their toys (though they've been on a "cooking" kick, which means my pots and pans are their "toys"), or draw at the kitchen table. Meanwhile, I rush around the house, accomplishing as much house clean-up and organization as I possibly can. This means I make the beds, start the laundry, fold any laundry leftover from the day before, and clean up the kitchen from breakfast.
Then. I either give the kids baths, or I just change diapers and sometimes clothes (depending on how dirty they are). After that, I've been reading a book to Matthias (typically between 7-10 minutes long), because I'm training him to sit on my lap quietly, without touching the book. Usually after that, I either do a training time with Matthias on the floor (teaching him that certain objects in the living room are "no"s), or I do a training time with the girls, or I read the girls books. We do something during this time--it just changes from day to day. I also feed Matthias again.
At 9:30 AM, I put Matthias down for his morning nap (normally 1 to 1 1/2 hours long). During his nap, I've been doing school with Rachel, reading to the girls, and preparing lunch and dinner. I'll make phone calls, write bills, fold laundry, do my hair, vacuum... again, it just depends on the day.
And then lunch "happens" anywhere from 10:45 to 11:45.
So that's been my morning. Who knows how long this routine will last, but it's working out very well for now!
